Iraheta Channels Her Inner A-ha in Debut Video
Posted by Michael on Tuesday Nov 24, 2009 Under UncategorizedWe’ve talked about the lovably humble Kris. We’ve talked about – and seen even more of – the Glammed one. Since we don’t talk about that lame case that came in third, it’s time to discuss last season’s unlikely Idol rocker.
It was a sad day in my apartment. The day we said goodbye to teenaged Allison Iraheta during Top 4 week of last season. For me, the despair was two-fold. The closest thing to Kelly Clarkson was gone and Danny Gross-key remained. “Why?? Why??,” I screamed at the television. Why would America cast-off such a talented, fiery little nugget and leave a man better suited touring strip malls throughout the Bible belt. Once I got over the fact that I’d have to sit through not one but three Gokey songs the following week, I settled for the fact that an album from Miss Iraheta was no longer a matter of if, but when.
When is almost here, and the first single (and accompanying video) have arrived. “Friday I’ll Be Over U” is exactly the kind of single Allison should be putting out. It’s young, upbeat and catchy, with a ton of guitar and drums driving the ship. Although the song hasn’t exactly caught on at radio, hopefully her label has a plan for better promo as her album release date approaches. They better hurry, though. The album drops next week, (12/1).
The video for the song was released last week, and it’s…interesting. The first time I watched it I was a little underwhelmed, but after another look I started to (sort of) like it. The clip is clearly an homage to A-ha’s 80s classic, “Take On Me,” complete with Allison and her band mates alternating between live action and animated sketches of themselves. Take note of the gender diverse band. It’s intentional, no doubt. (Girls can rock, too!)
Are those bottom teeth braces I see in the close-ups? Of course they are. Precious…and a little unsettling as she is also sitting on a giant pair of lips. Ugh, this video is getting worse as it goes. And the set pieces are the best of the bargain basement best. Oy Vey. The bright side? Allison’s voice is great, and her innocent –at times, awkward – charm shines through. Judge for yourself below.
